(i) The distribution of resources depends on a variety of physical factors such as like terrain, climate and altitude. since, all these factors are not same everywhere and vary from place to place on the earth the distribution of resources is unequal.

(ii) Resource conservation means using resources wisely and carefully and giving them time to get renewed so that it will be available for the coming generations This needs to be given on the resources which are limited and exhaustible.

(iii) Human resources are important because they can make the best uses of nature to create more resources. Also, the development of other resources solely depend upon human resources as they do so by applying knowledge, skill and technology.

(iv) Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future is called sustainable development. In simpler words, it means carefully utilization of resources so that not only it meets the present requirements but also takes care of the need of future generations.

These lines were written by the poet Abdur Rahim Khankhana, one of the nine gems of Akbar’s court. What kind of resource is the poet referring to? Write in 100 words what would happen if this resource disappeared?

Answers
The resource referred to by the poet is the water. It is one of the most indispensable resources of life. It can be said to be one of the preconditions of life, like air. Firstly, water serves the most basic purpose of drinking, without which life is not possible. In the absence of water, one would be unable to clean clothes, utensils, or even take a bath. Farmers depend on water for irrigation. Rainwater is so important for proper agriculture. Water is also used in cooking food. Nowadays water has proved to be a useful source of electricity. Besides human beings, plants require water for their growth. Water is also required for various industrial purposes in factories. In short, no form of life can go on without water.

Question 5:
Pretend that you live in the prehistoric times on a high windy plateau. What are the uses you and your friends could put the fast winds to? Can you call the wind a resource?
Now imagine that you are living in the same place in the year 2138. Can you put the winds to any use? How? Can you explain why the wind is an important resource now?

The following points may help you:
a) Wind has long been in use, since ancient time. It has been used for sailing boats, for navigation.
b) Gradually wind mills were built to grind crops also to pump out water.
c) Wind was regarded as a potential resource.
d) However due to lack of technology it could not be harnessed completely.
e) In 2138 , we can surely see wind being used to the fullest as an actual resource.
f) We have built wind turbines to generate electricity.
g) We can see more and more wind turbines brings used in industrial ares, in agricultural farms to meet irrigation and electricity needs.

Think of a few renewable resources and mention how their stock may get affected by overuse.

Answers
The oxygen of the air, natural water, solar energy, wind and biomass are the most commonly used renewable resources of the nature, which are automatically regenerated after being used. However, the overuse of these resources can exhaust the stock of some of these resources, mainly the biomass comprising of the woods and the related living organisms can become extinct if not given enough time to replenish themselves. Too much inhalation of oxygen in a limited area can pollute the air with excess carbon dioxide, if the place is void of any greenery.
